Secondary Campus Music
Our deep hope is that Surrey Christian School musicians embody, wonder, creativity, craftsmanship and humility, sharing beauty through music for restoring God’s world.
SCS Secondary Campus grades 8 – 12 musicians become fully alive in God’s story as they engage through music classes to be a joyful harmony and to voice together to glorify God in their lives and in the world by creating beauty through music. Our musicians are empowered to share their music within the school community and beyond, doing real work that meets a real need for real people.
Our Secondary Campus Music Department offers an exciting program for all grade levels:
The Concert Bands and Concert Choirs are the foundation of our music program where students work diligently together to create beautiful music and work individually to improve their skills and knowledge in music. Beyond participating in multiple concerts and festivals during the school year, music students perform for the residents of senior care homes in the BC interior and Vancouver Island. Grade 11 and 12 students have a bi-annual opportunity to tour internationally during spring break to experience the life and work of master composers.
Surrey Christian ROCKademy
The Grade 11 and 12 Rock Band and Junior Rock Band are unique music classes that offer an excellent opportunity for students who play guitar, bass, piano, synth or drums to learn, rehearse and perform this exciting but challenging genre of music. The course is scheduled during the regular timetable, and they have multiple rock festivals during the school year. Surrey Christian ROCKademy selects and performs music from the 60s to modern rock with themes that deal with social and political issues.
Java Men and Swing Girl
This Grade 10-12 Jazz Band meets twice a week on Mondays and Thursdays from 3:00 – 4:30 pm to rehearse “big band” music in styles such as swing, Latin, funk and rock. Java Men and Swing Girl are busy with many performance engagements throughout the school year.
92nd Avenue
This Grade 10-12 Vocal Jazz group is an exciting, fun ensemble that rehearses and performs various styles of music such as jazz standards, Latin and pop — either with a rhythm section or a capella. 92nd Avenue meets once a week on Wednesdays after school.
SCStrings is a unique, extracurricular music program offered to SCS students that starts with the basics of learning a stringed instrument (violin or cello) and provides the opportunity to develop skills in an ensemble setting. The program teaches musical literacy, theory, technique and ensemble playing. This program runs once a week on Tuesday after school for the entire school year, and includes a minimum of two performances. All students are responsible to provide their own instruments; music is provided.
